President Trump’s Cabinet Confirmations Are Stark Reminder of Need for D.C. Statehood

By: Miriam Edelman

Over the past few weeks, the Senate confirmed many of President Donald Trump’s nominations for major offices, including Cabinet positions. It will continue to consider and most likely confirm more of his nominations.

Since D.C. residents do not have any representation in the Senate, they have no say on who will fill these important positions and make crucial decisions that affect all Americans. Senators do not really want to hear the views of D.C. residents on nominations or anything else since Senators do not represent residents of the nation’s capital.

D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser emphasized this blatant unfairness on February 10, 2025. She said, “When important things are being debated like cabinet nominees, we neither have a voice or a vote.”

As new specialty license plates of the District of Columbia state, “We Demand Statehood.” Until D.C. becomes a state, its residents will never be full U.S. citizens. Let’s finally eradicate this civil rights abuse.
