See Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Discuss Her New Book on September 16, 2024

By: Miriam Edelman

DCNOW is pleased to let people know that former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will discuss her new book Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love, & Liberty in DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., on September 16, 2024. This new book, her 11th, is scheduled to come out on September 17th. Part of her nationwide book tour, this event will involve Secretary Clinton and a moderator taking “the audience on a journey of unvarnished exchanges on politics, democracy, the threats we face, as well as friendship, aging, marriage, and how we can all work together to shape a future to be proud of.” People can buy tickets for the event on https://www.ticketmaster.com/event/150060DB8EE31D6E.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1947, Secretary Clinton is an inspirational role model, especially for girls and women. After growing up in Park Ridge, a Chicago suburb, she attended Wellesley College, where she became the College’s commencement’s first student speaker. At Yale Law School, she met future U.S. President Bill Clinton. After graduating from Yale, Secretary Clinton worked for the Children’s Defense Fund, which Yale Law School alumna Marian Wright Edelman founded. As Clinton said at the National Portrait Gallery in 2023,

My life was changed the very minute I heard Marian speak at Yale. I had just read a Time magazine article about her and had been just so inspired about this crusading legal activist translating her faith into a life devoted to children's service and social justice.

Later, Clinton worked for a Congressional committee investigating President Nixon and co-founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families. In 1975, she married Bill Clinton, with whom she has one daughter (Chelsea). Secretary Clinton was First Lady of Arkansas. As First Lady of the U.S. between 1993 and 2001, she helped create the Children’s Health Insurance Program. At the 1995 U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women, she made her highly acclaimed, “human rights are women’s rights, and women’s rights are human rights once and for all” comment. As First Lady, she was elected a U.S. Senator representing New York. After running for President in 2008, she became U.S. Secretary of State during President Barack Obama’s first term. In 2016, she ran for President again, becoming the first female major party presidential nominee. She became the fifth person to win the popular vote but not become President, and she had the biggest popular vote margin (almost 2.9 million votes) of a losing candidate for President in the nation’s history.

In her post-government career, Secretary Clinton continues to be active in public life:

-          Onward Together encourages people to be civically engaged and to run for office.

-          Secretary Clinton co-founded HiddenLight Productions, which creates content for people around the world and tries to help “new talent, diverse voices, and untold stories from across the globe.”

Pritzker, Barbara Streisand, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Fran Lebowitz, author Judy Blume, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, actress Frances McDormand, comedian Kate McKinnon, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Representative Maxine Waters, long-time assistant Huma Abedin, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Senator Tammy Duckworth, actress Kerry Washington, Secretary of State Tony Blinken, poet Amanda Gorman, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Stacey Abrams, Chef José Andres, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, actress America Ferrera, activist Gloria Steinem, then-Senator Kamala Harris, singer John Legend, and Rev. William Barber.

-          She is the first female Chancellor of Queens University.

-          At her alma mater Wellesley College, the Hillary Rodham Clinton Center for Citizenship, Leadership, and Democracy works “to advance democracy and prepare the next generation of civic leaders and change-making citizens.”
